AMD Telemedicine Supplies Equipment and Training for Bahamian Telemedicine Pilot Project

January 7, 2008

AMD Telemedicine, the leading provider of telemedicine equipment with over 5,000 installations in 68 countries, today announced that it has provided telemedical equipment and training to local physicians for the inception of the Telemedicine Pilot Project of the Bahamas.

The project, which is funded by the Bahamian Ministry of Health and Social Development, links the Accident and Emergency Department at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Nassau with the Marsh Harbor Primary Care Clinic on Abaco, a member of the Family Islands.

"The Telemedicine Project will allow us to extend the same medical care to the remote islands that the persons in Nassau receive," said Minister of Health and Social Development Dr. the Hon. Hubert A. Minnis. "What this means is that those patients who are in the Family Islands, be it Abaco or other islands, will be able to be examined by our Emergency Room team here in New Providence in real time and assessed properly before a determination is made as to whether any further treatment is necessary."

Dr. Minnis went on to explain that the project is part of his government's futuristic thinking in the area of health care and other aspects of governance and will be expanded in the future into other areas of health care including Intensive Care Unit (ICU) management and treatment.

"We are very happy to provide the medical devices, installation, training, and support for the Bahamian Telemedicine Pilot Project," said Steve Normandin, President of AMD Telemedicine. "Along with Dr. Minnis and a host of dedicated doctors, medical administrators, IT and communications professionals, we at AMD have high hopes for this program, its good works, and its evolving goals."
